The family of Shalimar Abbiusi, a 30-year-old spokesperson for “The New Force,” is urgently calling for her release, alleging that the Ghana Immigration Service has unlawfully detained her. Abbiusi, a Belgian residing in Ghana, was arrested on Monday, December 4, on suspicion of using forged documents to obtain a residence permit.
In a video released by the political movement, Abbiusi’s mother claims, “They kidnapped my daughter; she did nothing wrong,” while her father adds, “She is not a criminal… the government should give my daughter back.” Abbiusi was detained during an investigation into her immigration status after the Immigration Service discovered her social media activities and her role with “The New Force.”
Abbiusi, who arrived in Ghana on September 4, 2017, initially as a student at Ghana Christian University College, was found to have never been enrolled there. The documents she provided for her residence permit were determined to be fraudulent. She now faces charges related to immigration offenses and is in custody awaiting court proceedings.
Her arrest has sparked significant online debate, with some Ghanaians speculating that the government may be trying to suppress the growing political movement. “The New Force” has recently gained attention for its critical stance on the current administration and plans to reveal more about its agenda and the identity of its leader.
